Frequently Asked Questions

How is the this yoga program different than other 200 hour yoga teacher trainings?

TThere will be heavy emphasis on trainees practicing teaching within each course session. In addition, this course will cover effective methods for leading group as well as one-on-one sessions. Different teaching techniques reflect an understanding that different people learn in different ways. Understanding the different ways in which people learn will help you learn effective ways of communicating deeper meaning while leading practitioners through practice. This will also help you deepen your own understanding and practice.

I am not sure if I want to teach. Is this training appropriate for me to deepen my practice?

Yes. These 13 weeks are an intense experience to deepen your own relationship to this practice. Many students are unsure when they enter if teaching is in their future. While we do spend a great deal of time practicing to teach and assist our fellow students, the inner journey of self awareness that is this practice of yoga can be life changing. In the process of helping others learn how to practice more effectively, it is amazing how much we learn about deepening our own practice.

Is attendance for all sessions mandatory? What if I have to miss a class?

Yes attendance is mandatory for all sessions. If you know in advance that you will need to miss a class, make-up assignments may be given if appropriate. Because so much information is given and built upon each day any absence becomes disruptive to the learning process and the group.

What if I can’t do advanced asanas?

Yoga is so much more than “advanced asanas”. While this program is not suitable for beginners, your sincere desire to study and learn is the only pre-requisite.

How do I receive my certification?

After successfully completing all requirements (100% attendance or make-up work, homework, reports, testing, assisting, and group classes) you will receive a certificate of completion and become a CYT-200 (certified yoga teacher at the 200 hour level) which will allow you to teach at New York Yoga or anywhere else.

How do I find work after graduation?

New York Yoga offers an opportunity to recent graduates to to sign up and teach a weekly community class (Stars of the Future). This allows new teachers to become more comfortable leading group classes. When you feel ready, New York Yoga holds auditions once per month which you are encouraged to attend.

Besides our weekend meetings are there any outside requirements?

Yes. You will be required to take at least 3 classes a week. You will be asked to observe 10 classes and also assist another teacher trainee (by giving hands on adjustments) in 5 additional classes. The observations and assists can be done in any regularly scheduled group class. There is homework given each week and a a midterm and final report and test. Successful completion of all outside requirements is necessary to receive your certification. Please contact Jenny Gammello with any questions at gammello@gmail.com.

Are there any discounts on classes/workshops or boutique items for trainees?

Yes! You will receive unlimited classes at New York Yoga for the duration of the program. You also will receive special discounts on classes/workshops and boutique items from the time your tuition is paid in full. Please ask the desk staff for further details.
